Atomos Shogun ProRes Corrupted — Recover the Take
The Shogun lineup (Shogun, Shogun Connect (2022), the Shogun Ultra, the new rack-mount Shogun AV-19 (announced Feb 2026, ships March 2026, $2,099 — a 19" 4K HDR monitor-recorder-switcher with quad-HD ISO recording), Shogun Studio, and the older Sumo) is built around ProRes recording. Like its smaller sibling the Ninja V/V+, the Shogun's primary failure mode is power-loss-mid-recording: the unit doesn't reach a clean stop, the MOV container's MOOV atom is never finalised, and you end up with a large, healthy-looking file that won't open in anything.
This page is the Shogun-specific version of the Atomos Ninja recovery guide. The recovery path is largely the same; the gotchas are similar but worth restating because Shogun users tend to record longer takes at higher data rates, and a few details shift accordingly.
What's on the SSD when a Shogun stops mid-record
[ftyp] ← container declaration, intact
[mdat] ← all your ProRes frames + LPCM audio interleaved (often dozens of GB)
[????] ← MOOV that should be here is empty / missing
Shogun units are commonly used for long-form interview, documentary, and live-event work. Files routinely run to 50–200 GB. That's the first thing to know: the recovery has to handle very large files correctly. Tools that use 32-bit chunk offsets (stco instead of co64) silently corrupt the second half of the recovered file.
Why Shogun recordings die mid-take
- NP-F or V-mount battery exhaustion. Long takes are the killer.
- D-tap cable working loose. Camera operators move; cables don't always cooperate.
- AC adapter brownout at venues with marginal power.
- SSD ejected mid-write — rare but happens.
- Firmware crash — documented on certain older AtomOS revisions, mostly fixed.
- Recording over an SSD's max-write threshold. Sub-spec SSDs can fail on a sustained ProRes 4444 write rate.
Two Shogun-specific quirks our engine handles
(Same as the Ninja but worth surfacing.)
- Little-endian PCM where MOV is normally big-endian. Atomos units write LE 24-bit PCM. Tools that swap bytes unconditionally produce static-sounding audio. We detect endianness from the data.
- Audio chunk placement at the start of the video group. Placing them at the end (which some recovery tools do) introduces a ~0.5 s sync offset.
What you can try first
- AtomOS rescue mode. Newer firmware has an "incomplete recording recovery" option that runs on the unit. Try this first.
untrunc(open-source). Built for exactly this failure mode. Needs a healthy reference file from the same Shogun in the same recording mode. Works well when a reference is available.- Connect the SSD to a computer and copy the file to a working drive before any recovery attempt. Always work on a copy.
How our recovery handles Shogun files
- No reference clip required. ProRes frames carry their own codec parameters; we extract resolution, profile, frame rate, and codec four-cc from the first valid frame.
- All ProRes flavours. Proxy, LT, 422, HQ, 4444, 4444 XQ.
- DNxHR / DNxHD. Shoguns can record DNx as well as ProRes; both are handled.
- ProRes RAW — partial. Frame detection works; full reconstruction depends on whether the metadata sidecar is intact.
co64for files over 4 GB, which is essentially every meaningful Shogun take.- Audio handled correctly for the LE 24-bit PCM and chunk-placement details above.
What you do
- Upload the Shogun file. Up to 50 GB. (For files larger than 50 GB, contact us — we handle larger files case-by-case.)
- ~1 minute later, free 5-second preview.
- Pay if it works ($29 tier for files in the 20–50 GB range, which Shogun takes commonly are). Adjust or escalate if not.
FAQ
Does this work on Shogun, Shogun Connect (2022), Shogun Ultra, Shogun AV-19 (March 2026), Shogun Studio, and Sumo? Yes. All Atomos units share the container behaviour. Codec varies (ProRes / ProRes RAW / DNx); our detector handles each. The Shogun Ultra's higher-bandwidth modes (12K RAW from V-RAPTOR / BURANO / VENICE 2 sources) write the same MOV envelope. The Shogun AV-19's quad-camera ISO recordings (up to 4 SDI feeds + 1 program output, in ProRes / ProRes RAW / Avid DNx, up to 8Kp30 10-bit 4:2:2) follow the same recovery path per-stream.
My file is 80 GB. Your pricing tops out at 50 GB. Get in touch — we handle very large files manually. The engine itself doesn't have a hard cap, but the upload pipeline currently does.
Can you recover ProRes RAW from a Shogun + Sony Venice setup? Partially. Structural recovery (rebuilding the container index) works in many cases. ProRes RAW carries camera-specific metadata for full RAW development; if that metadata is damaged, you may have a playable file but a limited grading pipeline.
My recording was 4K 120p ProRes 4444 to a Shogun Studio. Handled. The data rate is high but the recovery is the same conceptually.
Audio comes back out of sync with picture in my recovered file. That's the chunk-placement issue described above. Escalate the case after upload — we may need to rerun with adjusted parameters.
