FixMyVideos vs Wondershare Repairit

Wondershare Repairit is the most-advertised video repair tool on the internet. Search "repair corrupted video" and Repairit is everywhere — its parent company runs one of the largest marketing budgets in consumer software. Visibility isn't the same as being the right tool for your broken file, though. Here's a straight comparison, including the cases where Repairit is genuinely the better pick.

The difference that actually matters: damaged raw data

Most "AI repair" tools, Repairit included, lean on the file's metadata to rebuild the index. That works when the corruption is limited to the container — but when the underlying picture data (the mdat) is damaged, those tools tend to produce a file with coloured bands and digital noise rather than a clean result. This is a well-documented failure mode: an AI repair pass needs intact frames to work from; it can't invent the pixels that are gone.

FixMyVideos approaches it structurally. We rebuild the container's index from the actual frame boundaries we find in the file — codec parameters come from the first valid frame, not from a possibly-missing header — and we use 64-bit chunk offsets for any file over 4 GB so large recordings don't silently truncate. Crucially, you see a real 5-second preview of the recovered video before you decide to pay, so you're never guessing whether the repair worked.

Pricing: a subscription vs. one file

Repairit's headline pricing is built around licenses and subscriptions — sensible if you repair files regularly, expensive if you have one broken wedding, interview, or holiday clip. The online per-file option ($6.99) is closer to our model, but it's capped at 3 GB per file and gated behind an account, and the free trial only previews — you can't export without paying first.

FixMyVideos is pay-per-file by size (€5 / €15 / €29), and you only pay once a free preview has shown you the recovered footage. If we can't produce a usable preview, there's no charge.

When Wondershare Repairit is the better choice

We'd rather tell you the truth than win every comparison:

  • You're on a Windows-only, offline workflow and want a desktop app that never uploads your footage anywhere.
  • You repair files constantly — a studio doing dozens of repairs a month will amortize a subscription far better than paying per file.
  • Your file is a format we don't handle. Repairit lists 20+ container formats; if yours is an exotic one we don't support, their breadth may cover it.
  • You need offline batch processing of many files at once.

When FixMyVideos is the better choice

  • You have one (or a few) broken files and don't want a subscription.
  • The corruption is structural (truncated recording, missing/empty MOOV, card pulled mid-write) — our core case.
  • You want to see proof it worked before paying, not buy on faith.
  • You're on a Mac or a Chromebook, or just don't want to install anything.
  • Your file is large (4 GB–50 GB) — common for 4K/8K, ProRes, and XAVC.

What you do

  1. Upload your corrupted file. Drag and drop, up to 50 GB. Nothing to install.
  2. About a minute later you get a free 5-second preview of the recovered video.
  3. If it looks right, pay and download the full file. If not, tweak settings or escalate to manual review. No charge until you have a working preview.

FAQ

Is there a free Wondershare Repairit alternative? The genuinely free options are command-line tools like untrunc and FFmpeg — powerful but technical, and untrunc needs a matching reference clip. FixMyVideos isn't free, but the diagnostic and the 5-second preview are: you only pay if the preview proves your file is recoverable.

Why does Wondershare Repairit produce a glitchy or colour-banded result? That usually means the raw frame data itself is damaged, not just the container. AI repair tools rebuild from metadata and can't reconstruct missing picture data. A structural rebuild plus an honest preview tells you quickly whether the frames are actually intact.

Can I get a refund from Wondershare? Refund and auto-renewal complaints are a common theme in their public reviews. FixMyVideos avoids the problem by design — you only pay after you've seen the recovered preview, so there's nothing to refund for a file that couldn't be fixed.

Do I need a reference / sample file like Repairit's Advanced Repair? No. We extract codec parameters from the first valid frame inside your file. A reference clip is optional and only helps for a few formats (e.g. R3D, BRAW).

Is my footage safe if I upload it? Files go to an EU server, are auto-deleted within 48 hours, and are never shared or used to train any model. Privacy policy.
